Emotional reasoning is a big cause of depression and anxiety. It is his pessimism and fixation on his "feelings" that are causing his problems.
He believes "if I feel bad, things must be bad". He has a confirmation-bias that his life sucks, he ignores the positive, and focuses on the negative.
Try thinking of the most depressing/anxiety provoking thing possible, if done properly, you will feel depressed/anxious.
If this kid wants to change the way he feels, he must change the way he thinks.
Also, his faith in God must not be that good, because if it was he would probably not be depressed. Believing you have the creator of the universe on your side should be an idea that would make anyone happy. Deep down I bet he has lost his faith, but doesn't want to admit it openly.
The kid is depressed because he has been taught to believe in a nasty severe judging policeman in the sky that disallows spontaneity and freedom of thought. The solution is reality: to stop pretending to know that the policeman and his rigid life-rules exist (the key to which is regognizing that a "just " god would NOT demand submission without evidence of its existence). This leads to a slow awakening and difficult identity crisis period, but ultimately it will free the kid from the psychological and affective shackles of the ancient desert dogma that he was brainwashed into.
ReplyDeleteShawn's advice is essentially this: Submit. Stop questioning. Accept being psychologically restricted and behave yourself according to Biblical rules so that you can win God's favour and get rewarded with eternal paradise after reincarnation.
Shawn is just a pedlar of toxic mental bullshit and that university (Tyndale Seminary in Toronto) should not allow him to hold these amateur counselling sessions, which could well lead others to suicide attempts.
It must be strange to "love" something which you believe is causing so much pain. In some contexts religion may be a source of comfort, but I don't believe this is one of them.
ReplyDeleteThat guy is going to suicide. He should really get professional help before it is too late imo.
