Just imagine if David Blaine was sent back in time a few thousand years. Imagine what they would have thought of him? If you do not know who David Blaine is, check out the following videos:
These kinds of tricks blow the minds of people today. Imagine how people would have reacted several thousand years ago to this? I bet an entire religion/religions would be constructed in his name. In modern times people (most people that is), know that it is just slight-of-hand which creates the illusion of magic. Most even try to figure out how the trick was done (most people don't assume it is real magic); in the past most people wouldn't have, they would have thought he really had magical powers. Ignorance leaves holes in understanding, the idea of 'magic' can help fill those holes up — people are uncomfortable with ignorance, they would rather feign understanding. People thousands of years ago would have thought of David Blaine as being a prophet. I imagine slight-of-hand magic tricks have been around forever. Imagine if David Blaine was sent back in time 2,000 years? Imagine the stories that would be written about him. Figures like Jesus (if they existed), were probably just old-school magicians, exploiting the gullible. That and the writers are known for exaggerating events to make a good story. Regardless of that, David Blaine + Time Machine = New Religion.
