(Morality Fail) Jesus Promotes Hatred: Luke 14:25-26
Now large crowds were traveling with Jesus. He turned and said to them, "If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father, mother, wife, children, brothers, and sisters, as well as his own life, he can't be my disciple. -Luke 14:25-26
This is actually talking about not idolizing your fellow man over God, similar to how it says elsewhere not to turn away false gods, idols, etc. Verse 33 clarifies this a little. Cool [lack of] context, bro.
Totally Taken out of Context the best way to read the bible or any book is to read the whole thing or at least the whole story your quoting about I always notice ppl take things out of context to prove their points, be it religious people atheists or anyone trying to prove there points.
" "If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father, mother, wife, children, brothers, and sisters, as well as his own life, he can't be my disciple."
There is nothing to take out of a context with a statement like that. QQ moar
You guys aren't getting it. He means that you must not love anything else more than God. God does say love your mother, father etc. but he also means that you shouldn't love say your mom more than God.
The comment is in directly to love nothing more than god. However, it's more specific than that. Jesus is forming his cult and needs very devoted people. He seeks out the most bitter and unthinking for his disciples. He looks to those who feel self hate, and no love for their family, who do not plan ahead ( as in the foreman who only builds towers if he has the means to complete the job) and who will not sacrifice the lives of men for vanity's sake ( as in the king who will seek out peace if he anticipates his forces will be seafarer). This is not context for the average Christian, but for his dedicated entourage. In modern context it is the priesthood who must sacrifice the prospect of family and not think of failure in the future when they set upon god's work.
New Living Translation: Luke 14:25-26 A cost of being a disciple: A large crowd was following Jesus. He turned around and said to them, "If you want to be my disciple, you must hate everyone else by comparison-your father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters-yes, even your own life. Otherwise you cannot be my disciple." By comparison, all love must be like hate in your love of God.

ReplyDeleteCool [lack of] context, bro.
Correction: "to turn away" (not "not to turn away")
