Hypothetically let's say that there is a God, and free-will exists only in the choice between eternity in heaven or its polar opposite. For me it is hard to pick which I would rather go. On one hand, hell sounds painful—but on the other heaven sounds boring and demeaning (and eventually painful). Heaven on the surface seems like an enjoyable place, but, how enjoyable would it be to spend an eternity around an egomaniac that demands his ass be kissed for all time?
Hell I think would be very unpleasant at first, but in time a person could get used to it. Would be just more of the same for ever and ever, would be nothing to answer to other than pain itself. If it is only pain which must dealt with, then one can be free to think about anything—which separates it from heaven where free thinking does not exist. I would rather answer to only pain than to a character like God in a mental prison like heaven. While a being which created us to see which of us were slaves and which were destined for hell sounds nice and all, I would rather swim in a lake of fire. There is no free-will in a large sense (especially if there is a god); we have no choice whether or not we want to be here, and we have no choice whether or not we want to leave, we have a choice between pain or boredom. Imagine living around "believers" for an eternity? All that "I told you so" would speed up the process of boredom twofold. Imagine living around people like this for the rest of time....
or.....
While pain is unpleasant, it is never boring, unless you become used to it. If hell becomes boring then you still would retain the freedom of thought and freedom from the mandatory worship of the all-powerful a-hole. If hell is the ultimate punishment then it can get no worse, so thought crime is impossible. With freedom of thought comes freedom of perception.
So who would like to join me in hell if by some act of God there was one (c wut i did ther?)? I got the marshmallows covered.
Let's hope heaven is not for real. We're simply not made to exist in an environment without contrast. There has to be bad things happening to make the experience of good things possible. This video illustrates the point: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gLEwr49YTDs
ReplyDeleteI will join you. I won't bring anything though.
ReplyDeleteDon't worry, I'll bring enough marshmallows and box fans for everyone :)
ReplyDeleteYou are deceived if you think hell will be better than heaven. Thinking that heaven will be boring is a lie from the pit of Hell itself. Heaven is going to be an amazing place! Why would God create such an amazing world, that will soon pass away, and not an even more amazing heaven, which is eternal?
ReplyDeletewhy would GOd create Hell, Satan, THE CONCEPT OF EVIL if he was a good GOd. That was pretty stupid of him. SInce he is omniscient, therefore he knew everything that will happen and had happened. WHy then did he create Lucifer and then allowed him to create rebellious angels and start the "Evil SIde." That was stupid of God. HE created EVERYTHING. I think he has the power to destroy some petty rebellious angels. Wasn't that the point of the rebellion? THat it wasn't fair that God had all the power? How could he let something that ,first, is against him, and second, somthing he hates. DOesn't that mean he made a mistake? Meaning he isn't perfect. How am i in my bathroom right now, typing blasphemous statements againts "GOd." ANd don't give me the Free will speech! If God wants me to go to hell, there are several paradoxes that go with that. 1) he would have forseen me when he created the universe, thus have been forwarned not have me destined to be created because i will be against it. 2) the devil argument i made earlier 3)If god wants ANY ONE PERSON to go to hell, doesn't that make him evil. He shouldn't need a verbal reconciliation to be "accepted" in heaven. Why is it that one needs to kiss His ass before being "forgiven?" FOrgiveness shouldn't be a reward given by GOd. It is a benefit we have from a "GOod" and "Loving" god, whether you believe in him or not. I would save a bus full of Christians in a car accident if they aren't atheists. GOd should do the same to all humans because everyone is his (mistaken) creation. (GOing back to his mistake of creating non believers.) WIth my example i am more kind than the Judeo Christian God. I would save Bigots, THeists, and plain old ignorant ass holes from danger while the "benevolent" GOd is too selfish to permit everyone into his heaven. GOing back to the point of this article, I'd rather be in Hell having Hot Sweaty Fiery Gay Butt Sex with some hot studly devil!
ReplyDeleteIn all honesty, name one awesome person who's going to hell? All the rockstars, metalheads, punks and everyone else cool is going to hell, hell is going to be one big eternal party of sin, and it's gonna be freakin' awesome, if it existed that is, but I'm happy to go to hell, Satan sounds like an ok bloke, can I hitch a ride with anyone?
ReplyDeleteoops, I meant going to *heaven, my mistake :p
DeleteWell, I would rather go to the domain of an angel that rebelled against a tyrant, than go to a delusion of a "heaven" where I am excepted to kneel to the evilest being that ever existed (God). I'd rather go to hell.
