Using Satan as an excuse for bad behavior is one of the greatest scapegoats for Christians—or any other religious groups that believe in Satan (next to Jesus). It allows Christians (from here on out I will just refer to Christians to make it simpler) to ignore accountability for their immoral behavior by their standards or those excusing them.
For example, this father tortured his baby by putting it in a safe; then a refrigerator; after which he put the poor thing into a microwave causing severe burns, especially to the face. This is obviously very disgusting behavior. To make matters worse the wife stood by the husband claiming "Satan is responsible for my husband's behavior, it's not his fault" (paraphrasing). She stood by her husband, and in fact, is fighting to get her child out of the care of foster parents and back with her and her insane husband. This is just one example of Christians using Satan as justification to ignore wrongful behavior. There are obviously many problems with this sort of logic: first of all if Satan were real and he is to blame, then wouldn't an all-knowing/all-powerful God be equally responsible? It is sort of like seeing a person hanging on to the edge of a cliff. You walk up to the edge, becoming fully aware of the situation, the person cries out of your help, but you do nothing, and watch the person fall to their death. Christians in this case (while using the described logic) would blame gravity for the person's death, not holding you responsible at all for not helping. You could have saved the person's life, you had all the power to do it—in fact it would have taken a few moments of your time.
This of course is an argument that has been beaten to death. The point here is that the people that are unable to take responsibility for their actions are not as bound to the consequences of such behavior. This makes them less able to avoid/change bad habits: this is because if they do something bad, they have the ability to pretend that an imaginary enemy is responsible. Now the rational do not buy such nonsense, but unfortunately the rational are also the minority.
This video has a mother claiming demons were why she murdered her children:
Another point I would like to raise is how come a nonbeliever will go to hell—but if a person is influenced to do something nasty (like putting their baby into a microwave) and blames Satan—responsibility is transferred to an invisible super-villain. If this was not the case then Christians would outright disallow people from using Satan as a scapegoat for bad behavior.
Jeremy, I myself am a Christian, but I do not for one second believe that Satan can be blamed for the bad things we do. Now, it's obvious that you and i aren't going to agree on everything (you're an atheist and I'm Christian) but I definitely 100% am behind you on this. I do believe that Satan tempts us to do bad things but all in all it is a person's own decision to give in or not. In reference to your last point, i can understand where you are coming from. Why would God send non-believers who might vbe 'good' people, never done anything 'wrong' so to speak but then allow murderous Christians into heaven? A question asked by many as yourself. My only answer for this one is that 'God' sees all sin as sin, whether you tell a little white lie or murder someone doesn't matter to him. He thinks that all of it is wrong. It is human society that scales such sins as what is socially acceptable and what is not. Christians, and i'm not speaking for all of us because i admit there are many that wouldn't agree with me on half this stuff, ask God to forgive them of their sins and so the slate is wiped clean, hence he lets them into heaven, if he feels that the request is sincere. Non-Christians, do not ask for this forgiveness and therefore, do not receive it so their sin piles up and they are sent to hell. It doesn't seem fair but that's the way it is, or how i see it anyway. However, in the case you presented earlier about the man and his baby and wife, I find it hard, myself, to believe that such a person could ever go to heaven after what he did. Only God would know whether that man truly wanted forgiveness for those things, whether he was truly sorry for it and only God can grant him entrance to the place, we Christians strive for. Before i go can i just pose you a question.. Say that you are right, there is no higher being, no God, no Satan, no heaven and no hell and that this is it, life on earth is all there is, then I have wasted my some of my time at Church, some of it praying, some of it reading the bible and some of it talking to people about God, But assume that I am right, there is a higher being, a God, Satan, heaven and hell, I am going to spend my eternity in heaven but you will go to hell. Tossing it up, wasting a little bit of time, as you might see it, praying or reading the bible will get me into heaven if there is one but if there's not, what have I lost, really? Or not doing those things but having a fun life on earth to then go to hell if i am right.. i know what i'd choose.. Just think about it.
