Idolatry is usually defined as worship of any cult image, idea, or object, as opposed to the worship of a monotheistic God. It is considered a major sin in the Abrahamic religions whereas in religions where such activity is not considered a sin, the term "idolatry" itself is absent. Which images, ideas, and objects, constitute idolatry, and which constitute reasonable worship, is a matter of contention with some religious authorities and groups using the term to describe certain other religions apart from their own (sometimes resulting in iconoclasm). --WIKIPEDIA
It appears—by definition—impossible for any believer in a god to not commit idolatry. For example, in the majority of churches, Christians idolize an image of Jesus being executed. I'm sorry Christians, but having that plastic statue (or whatever they happen to be made of) is an obvious form of idolatry. It typically is the center piece of the worshiping session. Not only this, but pretending to eat Jesus' flesh and blood (in the form of wine and crackers) is worshiping an idea—which is another form of idolatry. Remember that story of the golden calf that made Moses go ape-shit? He was pissed off because they were committing idolatry. These are just a few of several examples of idolatry found within Christianity.
It is probably safe to say that Christians are the worst sinners when it comes to idolatry—but Muslims and Jews certainly do it on a regular basis as well. For example, let's look at that oh-so-precious holy-land that these two seem hell-bent on fighting over. I'm talking of course about Israel. To believe that a piece of land is holy is to worship it—which is a sin for both Jews and Muslims. Not convinced that fighting over Israel because it is perceived as 'holy' is a form of idolatry? The primary definition of the word 'worship' is: "The reverent love and devotion accorded a deity, an idol, or a sacred object." (Yahoo Education). The 'sacred object' is obviously the 'holy-land'. There are obviously countless examples of this. The funny thing is, nonbelievers are one of the few groups that do not commit the sin of idolatry.
Another form of idolatry is to worship an idea—or in other words, to give an idea "reverent love and devotion"; this is done all of the time by believers in Abrahamic religions. I'll be using Muslims in my next example. They worship the name of Muhammad as well as the historical figure he was (while at the same time worshiping the Koran and the idea of Allah). Both a person and an idea are being worshiped by Muslims making them hypocrites. Finding examples of idolatry is so very easy. The fact that words like Yahweh/God/Allah/Jesus etc. are meaningless to children unless taught about through indoctrination shows the hypocritical idolatry in action (as stated previously: worshiping an idea is idolatry).
Many believers forget that idolatry is a very serious offense. The purpose of this post was to make believers a little paranoid as well as to point out a major contradiction that exists within many of the world's religions. As a side note: no, I do not worship Darwin or Evolution, I simply recognize the historical and scientific relevance both have.
