Neither Atheism OR Religion

This guy seems to not understand what atheism is..

ATHEISM IS ONLY THE NON-BELIEF IN A GOD.

An atheist can also be spiritual—many Buddhist also consider themselves to be atheist. When a person asserts that a people can be 'into atheism', they miss what it being an atheist actually is. Atheism is not a belief system, period. I repeat: you can be an atheist, and also be open to spiritual experiences. Just like a person cannot be into not believing in astrology—the act of not believing something is not a belief at all.

I know this all seems obvious, but for some reason many are unable to understand this very basic concept.

  1. I think this guy, while wrong, is picking up on a different reality, that the recent upsurge of atheism has been intertwined with a disdain of the supernatural. The people in the news for being atheists are mainly skeptics and against any sort of superstitious and supernatural belief. It has created the impression, including to many atheists, that "atheism" is identical to naturalism, or rather anti-supernaturalism. He's using "atheist" to describe a particular subset of atheism, and, probably using "religious" to refer solely to large organized official religions, painting his own position as the new third way.
