AA Destroying The Social Lives Of Thousands Of Once-Fun Americans

Yes, The Onion is a fake-news program.

AA (alcoholics anonymous) is an organisation which has good intentions, but fails at having a positive impact in most cases (in my opinion). One of AA's biggest problems is that they see alcohol consumption as a black and white issue. The focus should be on teaching healthy-moderation along with exploring the reasons for the alcohol abuse among its members. To treat all of its members as if they have the same problem is only misleading people into believing that Alcoholism IS the problem instead of a symptom (misguiding people over the cause of their problems makes their problem even harder to deal with). Alcoholics are typically people who have deep-down problems (so 'deep' they may not even know what it is) that use alcohol as an escape.

AA are bad at what they do because they focus on treating a symptom of a problem instead of addressing the root-cause. The point here is that if the initial problem is dealt with, then the person will no longer drink to self-medicate—the former alcoholic will drink recreationally instead of as a piss-poor coping mechanism.

AA uses a fear-mongering religion along with a demonizing paranoia of alcohol to "cure" people of a symptom.

I'm not saying that people with alcohol problems should not seek help, however when dealing with  behavioral/psycological problems, a psychologist and/or therapist should be used instead of a religiously-driven cult.
