Strange someone his age wouldn't be more set in his ways. Normally those that drop their religion and become atheists are younger (which seems obvious). Atheism can be very liberating, assuming there are no psychological needs remaining (fear of death, etc.) that were gotten by religion. While being an atheist on paper seems good all-in-all (at least from a biased atheist perspective), it perhaps isn't right for all people. I'm not trying to be demeaning, but if I spent 60+ years basing my existence on religion, I imagine it would be a mindf@ck for me to drop it for atheism. He seems intelligent, I'm sure he'll be fine...
